Goldcrest

£65.00

This little songbird is based on a goldcrest. He has a grey, white and buff belly, shimmery green back, black and white wings and a crest of yellow on the top of his head.

He measures 15 cm (6 inches) from beak to tail. The goldcrest is one of our smallest garden birds, but as you can tell from the measurements, mine are much bigger, so he’ll make a proper statement on your shelf or mantelpiece.

According to folklore, the goldcrest earned its flame coloured crown by winning a contest among the birds. There was a competition to decide the King of the birds, which the goldcrest won by flying the highest. It managed to sneak victory by hiding under the wing of an eagle. It was so small the eagle did not notice, and when it grew tired of soaring so high, the goldcrest pipped ahead and claimed the title. Its scientific name is Regulus regulus, which means king or knight.
