Hoopoe on a tree stump
This handmade paper sculpture features a hoopoe perched on a tree stump adorned with purple blossoms.
The hoopoe sculpture is made from handprinted papers in soft peach, black and white. He has a long grey beak and grey feet. He’s the very first of his kind. His tree stump has some paper lichen and two types of paper flowers in pale purple.
I feel like I may say this every time I make a new bird, but hoopoes are definitely one of my favourites. I love their song (a ‘hoo-poo-poo’, from which they get their name), the way they hop, and their majestic hair dos! Hoopoes are summer visitors to the UK from Africa, and the elevated heat and strong winds have encouraged a record number of pairs to spend their summer with us this year, instead of central Europe. They are mostly in the South of England, so keep an eye out if you can.
I have included some desk shots in the photos, so you can see a few stages of him being made. I always think they look rather funny without their beaks!
The tree stump is a paper sculpture built around a terracotta pot (for weight and strength). It has a cork base, to protect your furniture.
This piece is about 28 cm high. The hoopoe is about 26 cm from head to tail, and around 32 cm from beak to tail.
