Redstart on a wreath of yellow blossom
This redstart sculpture is made from hand printed papers in black, slate grey and white, with a rusty red bello. I’m rather fond of his little eye stripe! I’ve used some metallic lustres in the printing process, so his feathers have a soft shimmer along his back and wings.
He perches on a wreath of yellow blossom flowers. Each bloom has a green middle.
This piece measures 24 cm (9.5 inches) tall and 21 cm (8 inches) wide. The redstart is 10 cm (4 inches) from tail to beak.
Hangs with a steel hook, suspended at a 30 cm drop with invisible fishing line.
Redstarts are summer migrants in the UK. They come here from central Africa to breed between April and September. You might spot them building nests in tree cavities in the woods. The name comes from their tail, which they flick up and down. The underside is a rusty red colour.
